Wedding First Dance Lessons in Houston: How Much Time Do You Actually Need?

Every couple asks me the same question, usually in the same slightly worried voice: how much time do we actually need to get ready for our first dance? After years of teaching wedding couples here in Houston, I can give you the honest answer instead of the scary one.
The short answer: three months is comfortable, four is luxurious
If your wedding is three months out and you have not started, you are fine. Truly. Three months means weekly lessons with time to practice in between, a choreography that fits your song, and a couple of buffer weeks at the end so the final stretch is polish instead of panic. Four months means all of that plus room for the weeks when wedding planning eats your schedule, because some weeks it will.
What if the wedding is closer than that?
Come in anyway. A first dance does not have to be a production number. In a handful of lessons we can build what I call the sway-turn-dip: a confident hold, a few traveling steps that fit any slow song, one underarm turn for the photographer, and an ending dip that gets the applause. Couples who walk in six weeks out and master those four things look wonderful. The dance floor does not grade on difficulty. It grades on whether you two look happy out there.
What the lessons are actually like
Most couples come in nervous and leave laughing. You do not need experience, you do not need rhythm yet, and you absolutely do not need to be "dancers." Lessons are private, just the two of you and your instructor, usually weekday evenings or weekends. We start with how you stand together, then build steps that suit your song, your dress, your shoes, and your venue. Several couples have told me the weekly lesson became their favorite date night of the whole engagement, which might be the best review a studio can get.
A note about the song
Bring one if you have it. If you do not, that is genuinely part of the fun: tell us the artist you both love and we will find the version with the right tempo. Foxtrot-friendly songs make gliding easy, rumba-friendly songs make slow and romantic look effortless, and yes, that one indie song you both adore almost certainly works for one of them.
Where to start in Houston
Memorial Dancesport Ballroom is at 8412 Katy Freeway, Suite 320, just inside the Loop on I-10 between Memorial and Spring Branch, with free parking at the door. The first consultation lesson for wedding couples is free, thirty minutes, no pressure and no contract talk. Bring your song, bring your questions, bring the person you are marrying. We will take care of the rest.
If your date is on the calendar, the best time to start was last month and the second-best time is this week. I would love to meet you both.
