What a Visiting Coach Day Looks Like at a Houston Ballroom Studio

Every so often the studio calendar gets a little louder than usual. A visiting coach day is coming, and if you have never seen one up close, this is what actually happens inside a ballroom studio in Houston when a world-class coach walks through the door.

On July 28th, Igor Pilipenchuk, one of the country's most respected ballroom coaches, teaches here at the studio on Katy Freeway. Days like this are one of my favorite things about working at Memorial Dancesport Ballroom, and they are open to students at every level, not just competitors.

What a visiting coach day actually looks like

The floor fills up early. Lessons run back to back all day, and between them students linger to watch each other work. A coach who travels the country judging and teaching sees hundreds of dancers a year, so their eye is fast. In one lesson they will usually find the single thing that unlocks the next six months of your dancing.

That is the real value. Not a magic trick, not a new routine, just a fresh, expert pair of eyes on the habits your regular teacher and you have been circling.

Do beginners belong there?

Yes, and I mean that. Some of the best coaching moments I have watched happened with students who had been dancing for a few months, not a few decades. A great coach meets you exactly where you are. If you can walk, they have something for you to work on, and the sign-up sheets at the front desk are open to everyone.

If you are brand new and not ready for a coaching lesson yet, come watch. The energy in the room on a coaching day teaches you something all by itself, and it is a very good preview of what this corner of Houston's ballroom world feels like.

Why studios host visiting coaches

A studio that brings in outside coaches is telling you something about its culture. Nobody here believes the learning stops, including the teachers. The instructors take lessons on coaching days too, which I think is the healthiest thing a student can see: the person who teaches you on Tuesday is a student themselves on the 28th.

How to make the most of a coaching lesson

Come with one question. Not five, one. "My Waltz feels rushed" or "I lose my balance in turns" gives a coach a doorway. Take notes right after, because the fix always sounds obvious in the moment and evaporates by the drive home on the Katy Freeway. Then bring the notes to your next regular lesson so your teacher can build it into your plan.
